Carl Sagan’s book The Demon-Haunted World, Science As A Candle In The Dark, investigates how society can make decisions and differentiate between science and myth.
Society can filter scientific information via newspapers, TV, the Internet, etc. to the point that the discoveries of science can be ‘spun’ or filtered out before it reaches us. Culture, educational system, communications, and government can control scientific information so that what trickles through to people is a murky vision of the facts of how science works or what has been established as scientific theory. A current example of this culminated in the legal trial that took place in Dover, Pennsylvania on evolution versus creationism.
